The honest reality to the above question is you probably… CANʼT! When I played
(professional) little league baseball, I always gave 100% – but I didnʼt sprint to first base
on walks or attempt to decapitate opponents running the bases like Pete Rose.
Iʼm sure if you told Mr. Rose aka “Charlie Hustle”, to take a 90 mph fastball to the belly
for the team, he would have volunteered without hesitation. This type of individual is
from a lost tribe; however, Iʼm sure you know of someone (whether at work, sports,
business, etc…) that fits the description.
Ironicly, I recognized later than sooner, that imitating these individuals was not my best
blueprint. But it seems society is convinced that the best strategy for success is to
imitate workaholics +1:
• If “Charlie Hustle” runs 5 miles you have to run 6 miles.
• If “Charlie Hustle” works from 9 to 5, you then have work from sun up to sun down.
• If “Charlie Hustle” Corp. has a 1,000,000 employees, you need 1,000,001.
Contrary to popular belief this is NOT the best optimization of your valuable time (Read: What is your time worth?). Now understand, I am a proponent of a strong work ethic. However, thru trial and error, I have discovered the formula for outpacing the “Charlie Hustle” type… Out think and Outsource. The combination of the Internet explosion and economic meltdown presents opportunities to streamline ideas into action for pennies on the dollar.
Specifically for creative thinkers, entrepreneurs and start-ups – opportunities are
abundant in the 21st century, if you use your third eye. For example, someone with an “employee mindset” reads the news headline about another 95,000 jobs lost and cringes. But a “creative thinker” reads the same headline and envisions that within this employment population are incredibly skilled professionals potentially at his/her disposal. I often hire white-collar talent with alphabets after their names and resumes as long as the
The moral is “Charlie Hustle” is a great template but with an addendum – you manage the creative and outsource the hustle portion. The Internet provides numerous outsourcing websites (Elance, Guru, Freelancer) at your fingertips, you can hire two or three overachievers for half the price of one individual to run through all your brick walls. Thinking outside the box could never be more beneficial then now.
